PROFESSORS

Carol Amato, BA, MA
Master's Degree of Arts in Cultural Anthropology
California State University, Fullerton

Professor
Professor Amato teaches business communications and other writing courses. When she was in the fourth grade, she decided she wanted to be a writer. That career has been realized. To date, she has published 24 books and almost 200 articles. Books 25 and 26, both novels, are in the works. She received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and French from the University of Portland and her Master of Arts in Cultural Anthropology from California State University, Fullerton.

After graduate school, she started two businesses. One was a technical writing consulting business. The clients consisted of many of aerospace, computer, and electronics companies. She wrote proposals, software user manuals, policy and procedure manuals, and other documentation.

The other consulting business focused on my other her ¾ space. This company did human factor research for the space program. In 1980, she helped designed a space station for NASA using the shuttle fuel tanks, and updated this design in 1990 when Space Station Freedom was in danger of being canceled. The studies on undersea labs and Antarctic research labs provided the groundwork for how to keep astronauts sane in space over long periods of time. She tried to design her research so that she would have to be present in space to test it out. Unfortunately, NASA did not see things that way. When the Challenger crashed, the bottom dropped out of the human factor business. It never really got back on the same track.

In the mid-90s, she saw an opportunity to start yet another business, Stargazer Publishing Company, to publish user-friendly versions of existing style manuals for formatting research papers. Stargazer now also publishes business books and novels for middle-graders. That includes my latest titles and several from other authors.

Frank earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities from The Ohio State University, his Master of Arts degree in Theology from The International School of Theology, his Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Management and Education from Claremont Graduate University.

On his philosophy of education, Frank writes:

"I want to help students develop in the four skill areas that the American Management Association complains new graduates are ill-prepared: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. These skills are critical for avoiding what Harvard's Theodore Levitt called marketing myopia--tunnel vision brought on by failure to see and adapt to changing circumstances.

“That's why I measure success not by the percentage of new buzzwords a student can retain and regurgitate, but by his or her analytic acumen. I teach students to frame any problem as a story, filled with characters and conflict. Then I help them resolve the conflicts that unfold across that story's dramatic arc. Course content thus becomes a set of analytic lenses though which to view and solve problems. In graduate education, we call this the case method of teaching-learning.”

One of his experiences was working at the restraining order clinic at the Madge Bradley Courthouse. For this service, Luke was awarded the Wiley E. Manuel award from the State Bar of California for his dedication to pro bono service. At the same time, he was inducted into the California Western Pro Bono Honors Society.

Throughout his time at California Western, Luke was active in several clubs and organizations. His main commitment was serving as president of the Child, Family, Elder Law Society. He worked tirelessly to relaunch the society which had collapsed and helped to create a mentoring program for upcoming leaders to ensure future success of the society. Through specialized coursework in alternate dispute resolution, domestic violence, and through focused pro bono work and internships, Luke was able to obtain his Juris Doctor degree with the Child, Family, Elder law specialization certificate with honors.  Luke immediately began applying for jobs and was hired in June of 2011 as the sole negotiator for Bridgepoint Education. Following his time there, he opened this firm: Martin & Woodward, LLP.

Luke currently serves as a director on the California Western Alumni Board. As well as, an adjunct faculty member at Ashford University, Bristol University, and New England College. Luke believes in working hard in order to play hard. When he is not working, he is probably trying new restaurants, wine tasting, riding roller coasters at an amusement park, or playing catch with his two dogs.

Luke believes, "To Teach is to be Taught.” I learn as much from my students as they do from me."
